What Is A Dog Professor?
A Dog Professor enhances our students learning with hands-on experience during our on-site courses at 'The Q' in Springfield, MO.
Our courses feature 2-4 lab sessions daily, with each group consisting of 1 CRI instructor, up to 5 students, and one dog.
Dog Professor FAQs
- Calm Personality
- People Friendly
- Dog Friendly (not required)
- Allows people to touch them
- Will lay on their side (required in some labs)
- Will work for treats/positive reinforcements
Our labs can include any of the following:
1. Anatomy & Palpation: Need the dog to stand and let us feel bony landmarks and rub
2. Assessment Techniques: Measure the range of motion with a goniometer tool. We would like them to lie down, but that doesn't always happen
3. Modalities: We are not treating any issues during labs. We will practice the placement of laser probes on the dogs.
4. Therapeutic Exercises: Teaching students how to perform these exercises. A very treat-motivated lab!
5. Case Evaluations: Dogs with current problems are preferred for this lab so the students can practice finding those issues, but is not a requirement.
6. Acupuncture: Dogs receive an acupuncture session from veterinarians getting certified in canine acupuncture.
We know that you want to watch what the students are learning and love being with your dog, however, our Dog Professors tend to do better when mom and dad aren't with them in the room.
If there is a concern or reason as to why you will need to be with them during labs, please let us know and we can see how to best accommodate.
Course Days: 4 or 5 days with 2-4 labs being held each day.
Drop-Off/Pick-Up Times: The earliest we are at CRI is 7 am and class ends at 6 pm, however, the last day of class ends at 3 pm.
*Your dog can stay with us the whole day if that works best for your schedule. Some parents will drop them off right before their lab time starts and pick them up as soon as it is over.*
"Working" Days: You can sign up for as many class days as desired. It is recommended to provide your dog with a day of rest between "work" to ensure they have time to rest.
Great question! We have a "Dog Professor" room that we share with a Canine Rehabilitation hospital and includes 12 kennels and 2 runs. We have cushioned beds and plenty of fluffy towels to keep them comfy. Each dog is walked throughout the day and is given plenty of water to keep them hydrated.
'The Q' is what we call our Headquarters.
Location: 2137 S. Eastgate Ave, Springfield, MO 65809
When arriving for your lab you will go to the West side of the building and locate a door that says "Dog Professor Entrance". Ring the doorbell and we will be there soon to let you in.
