Scope of Practice

The field of Canine Rehabilitation involves the integration of veterinary medicine and physical therapy to assist patients. Each profession brings specialized skills and knowledge to the table. Specific guidelines based on state practice acts dictate what each rehabilitation professional is allowed to do about patient care. Please be sure to check your state or territory's practice act to make sure you are staying within your scope of practice. We believe the ideal rehabilitation team is a collaboration between a Rehabilitation Certified Veterinarian, a Rehabilitation Certified Physical Therapist, and a Rehabilitation Certified Veterinary Technician/Assistant. This setup allows each licensure to work at the highest level of their scope of practice but does not overstep the vital skills needed to provide safe therapy. It is never appropriate for a veterinary technician or assistant to conduct evaluations and formulate treatment plans, even if they are certified in rehabilitation.
